چکیده

Mo-Si-B intermetallics consisting of the phases Mo3Si and Mo5SiB2, and a molybdenum solid solution (“ -Mo”), have melting points on the order of 2000 °C. These alloys have potential as oxidationresistant ultra-high-temperature structural materials. They can be designed with microstructures containing either individual -Mo particles or a continuous -Mo phase. A compilation of existing data shows that an increase in the volume fraction of the -Mo phase increases the room-temperature fracture toughness at the expense of the oxidation resistance and the creep strength. If the -Mo phase could be further ductilized, less -Mo would be needed to achieve an adequate value of the fracture toughness, and the oxidation resistance would be improved. It is shown that microalloying of MoSi-B intermetallics with Zr and the addition of MgAl2O4 spinel particles to Mo both hold promise in this regard.

Role of Microstructure in Promoting Fracture and Fatigue Resistance in Mo-Si-B Alloys

An investigation of how microstructural features affect the fracture and fatigue properties of a promising class of high temperature Mo-Si-B based alloys is presented. Fracture toughness and fatigue-crack growth properties are measured at 25o and 1300oC for five Mo-Mo3Si-Mo5SiB2 containing alloys produced by powder metallurgy with α-Mo matrices. Results are compared with previous studies on int...

Microstructure Characterization and Wear-Resistant Properties Evaluation of an Intermetallic Composite in Ni–Mo–Si System

Intermetallic compounds have been studied for their potential application as structural wear materials or coatings on engineering steels. In the present work, a newly designed intermetallic composite in a Ni-Mo-Si system was fabricated by arc-melting process with commercially pure metal powders as starting materials. The chemical composition of this intermetallic composite is 45Ni-40Mo-15Si (at...

On the Fracture and Fatigue Properties of Mo-Mo3Si-Mo5SiB2 Refractory Intermetallic Alloys at Ambient to Elevated Temperatures (25 °C to 1300 °C)

The need for structural materials with high-temperature strength and oxidation resistance coupled with adequate lower-temperature toughness for potential use at temperatures above ,1000 8C has remained a persistent challenge in materials science. In this work, one promising class of intermetallic alloys is examined, namely, boron-containing molybdenum silicides, with compositions in the range M...

Microstructure and Tribological Properties of Mo–40Ni–13Si Multiphase Intermetallic Alloy

Intermetallic compounds are increasingly being expected to be utilized in tribological environments, but to date their implementation is hindered by insufficient ductility at low and medium temperatures. This paper presents a novel multiphase intermetallic alloy with the chemical composition of Mo-40Ni-13Si (at %). Microstructure characterization reveals that a certain amount of ductile Mo phas...

Ambient- to Elevated-Temperature Fracture and Fatigue Properties of Mo-Si-B Alloys: Role of Microstructure

Ambientto elevated-temperature fracture and fatigue-crack growth results are presented for five MoMo3Si-Mo5SiB2–containing -Mo matrix (17 to 49 vol pct) alloys, which are compared to results for intermetallic-matrix alloys with similar compositions. By increasing the -Mo volume fraction, ductility, or microstructural coarseness, or by using a continuous -Mo matrix, it was found that improved fr...
